Bishops Statements – The U.S. Supreme Court and “Same-Sex Marriage”

06.26.15: Statement from Bishop Tobin – The Supreme Court and “Same-Sex Marriage”

A thousand courts may rule otherwise, but the very notion of “same-sex marriage” is morally wrong and a blatant rejection of God’s plan for the human family. As Pope Francis taught while serving as Archbishop in Argentina: “Same-sex marriage is not simply a political struggle, but it is an attempt to destroy God’s plan. It is a move of the ‘father of lies’ who seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God.”

Despite the current trends of our society, or perhaps because of them, the Church must redouble its commitment to proclaim and defend authentic concepts of marriage and family as we have received them from God. We will always do so, however, in a respectful, charitable and constructive manner.

Bishop Strickland’s Statement on U.S. Supreme Court Decision

[…] I join with the Bishops of the United States in calling this decision a “tragic error.”

Let me unambiguously state at the outset that this extremely unfortunate decision by our government is unjust and immoral, and it is our duty to clearly and emphatically oppose it. In spite of the decision by the Supreme Court, there are absolutely no grounds for considering unions between two persons of the same sex to be in any way similar to God’s plan for marriage and the family. Regardless of this decision, what God has revealed and what the Church therefore holds to be true about marriage has not changed and is unchangeable.

[…]

Given this and recognizing my responsibility and moral authority as the shepherd of this Church of Tyler, I will shortly issue a decree in this Diocese establishing, as particular law, that no member of the clergy or any person acting as employee of the Church may in any way participate in the solemnization or consecration of same-sex marriages, and that no Catholic facilities or properties, including churches, chapels, meeting halls, Catholic educational, health or charitable institutions, or any places dedicated or consecrated, or use for Catholic worship, may be used for the solemnization or consecration of same-sex marriages.

Finally, I call on the Catholic faithful of the Diocese to turn in prayer to the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, asking their intercession for our nation that all of us may come to a greater understanding of the beauty, truth and goodness that is found in marriage as revealed to us by our Savior.

Homily for Fortnight for Freedom, Mass 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year B, Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, June 28, 2015, Most Reverend Thomas John Paprocki, Bishop of Springfield in Illinois.

We might ask: why has God allowed these attacks on our faith and our Church to happen? Why did He not answer our prayers for the protection of the true meaning of marriage in our country? The answer, I believe, is that we are being called to put God above all else, even above our nation and our country’s laws. Jesus Christ is our Sovereign King to whom we owe all of our love, fidelity and allegiance. We are called to love others, not by condoning their sins, but by helping them to lead virtuous lives and remain faithful to the commandments, for Jesus promises that it is the pure in heart who will see God (Matthew 5:8). We are called to let the “bright light of truth” shine forth to overcome the “darkness of error.” In short, God gives us these challenges as a test of our faith, our hope and our love.

Bishops across the country weigh in on SCOTUS ruling [UPDATED], by Catherine Harmon | CWR

V. Let us pray for the Bishops Tobin, Strickland, Paprocki, Silva, and Jarrell [and for all the Bishops].
R. May they stand courageously and tend your flock, O Lord, in your sublime name.

This is Religion! to ‘Dear Catholic World: Why do YOU Remain a Catholic?’

One reason, because, ‘This is Religion’.

[In] the catholic Church … I recognized at once a reality which was quite a new thing with me. Then I was sensible that I was not making myself a Church by an effort of thought; I needed not to make an act of faith in her; I had not painfully to force myself into a position, but my mind fell back upon itself in relaxation and in peace, and I gazed at her almost passively as a great objective fact. I looked at her; at her rites, her ceremonial, and her precepts; and I said, ‘This is a religion’.

Is God Male AND Female?

From my comments here: What the ‘Early Church Parents’ said about God’s gender | Catholic Herald:

What does the Church teach?

CCC 370 In no way is God in man’s image. He is neither man nor woman. God is pure spirit in which there is no place for the difference between the sexes. But the respective “perfections” of man and woman reflect something of the infinite perfection of God: those of a mother and those of a father and husband.

“What the ‘Early Church Parents‘ said about God’s gender? This [words in-bold] is just foolish and adds to the confusion. To me, the confusion consistent with and a product of our sex-obsessed culture and influence by what Vatican termed as radical feminine themes. God has no gender as the article quotes St. Jerome.

What does Scripture say?

From the plain reading of Gn 1:7 (RSVCE) – So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them, and from Church teaching above, it appears that while God in neither male nor female and not in the image of man [no gender], he is Male AND Female [and made man in this image], and the better question might have been what is the understanding of this, and why is it God chose to reveal himself in male terms. In summary, in relation to man, God, who alone is Father [of Our LORD Jesus Christ as Jesus revealed him cf. CCC 240] unlike any other father, is father and husband to man and Israel, and Jesus, the Bridegroom, the husband to the Church, his Mystical Body and Bride.

From the revelation of the Son, that we should believe him that he is in the Father and the Father is in him [cf. Jn 14:11 (RSVCE)], within the Church there has come the understanding of circuminsession, the mutual immanence of the three distinct persons of the Holy Trinity. This is one of my understanding of God being Male & Female.

Endnote: I hope it does not escape readers that confusion regarding Trinity, the central mystery of the Christian faith and life, is at a time when there is widespread confusion about the nature of man himself [cf. gender ideology, radical feminism, “gay marriage”, etc.].

The Father communicates his whole divine essence to the Son [without alienating it from himself]. Here the Father is giving and the Son receiving. The way I see it, within the Godhead, each Person of the Blessed Trinity receives from and gives to Godhead. The Father, Being [=Good], the Son [Truth], and the Spirit [Love/Spirit/Ghost]. God generates the Son, they both breathe forth the Holy Spirit and … that’s why God is worshiped in Spirit and in Truth, what the Father, who is “the principle without principle“, receives. In the Godhead, there is the eternal exchange among the persons of the Blessed Trinity.

The “Maleness” of the Spirit: For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. [Cf. 1 Cor 2:10 (RSVCE)].

If God were not a Trinity as he has revealed himself, he would be blind and indifferent.

With the Father, God IS (I am Who AM).

With the Son, God is Truth (“You are True”) [or God is Light].

With the Holy Spirit, God is Love (“You are Lovely”), burning, yet not consumed [cf. Ex 3:1-3].

SAINT CHARLES LWANGA, MARTYR, AND HIS COMPANIONS MARTYRS

St. Charles Lwanga

SAINT CHARLES LWANGA, MARTYR, AND HIS COMPANIONS MARTYRS

Charles was one of 22 Ugandan martyrs who converted from paganism. Though he was baptized the night before being put to death, he became a moral leader. He was the chief of the royal pages and was considered the strongest athlete of the court. He was also known as “the most handsome man of the Kingdom of the Uganda.” He instructed his friends in the Catholic Faith and he personally baptized boy pages. He inspired and encouraged his companions to remain chaste and faithful. He protected his companions, ages 13-30, from the immoral acts and homosexual demands of the [Bagandan] ruler, Mwanga.

Mwanga was a superstitious pagan king who originally was tolerant of Catholicism. However, his chief assistant, Katikiro, slowly convinced him that Christians were a threat to his rule. The premise was if these Christians would not bow to him, nor make sacrifices to their pagan god, nor pillage, massacre, nor make war, what would happen if his whole kingdom converted to Catholicism?

When Charles was sentenced to death, he seemed very peaceful, one might even say, cheerful. He was to be executed by being burnt to death. While the pyre was being prepared, he asked to be untied so that he could arrange the sticks. He then lay down upon them. When the executioner said that Charles would be burned slowly so death, Charles replied by saying that he was very glad to be dying for the True Faith. He made no cry of pain but just twisted and moaned, “Kotanda! (O my God!).” He was burned to death by Mwanga’s order on June 3, 1886. Pope Paul VI canonized Charles Lwanga and his companions on June 22, 1964. We celebrate his memorial on June 3rd of the Roman Calendar. Charles is the Patron of the African Youth of Catholic Action.

A Scientific Dissent From Darwinism

A Scientific Dissent From Darwinism “We are skeptical of claims for the ability of random mutation and natural selection to account for the complexity of life. Careful examination of the evidence for Darwinian theory should be encouraged.”

“There is scientific dissent from Darwinism. It deserves to be heard.”

Darwin called his theory “descent with modification.” The phrase reflected Darwin’s belief that all organisms are modified descendants of a common ancestor that lived in the distant past.
